Again, my simple kitchen chair becomes the vehicle for my feelings about belonging and longing. The kitchen table, at which we eat as a family, is the ultimate symbol of togetherness and so when that perfect picture is disrupted, it is a powerful reminder of the tenuous nature of our belonging. I worked on this painting while listening to The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri, the story of a family that was forced to leave Syria. Every brush mark felt like a piece of this story.
